This Mainer is used to catching brookies and salmon in his home waters up in the Northwoods, but he figured it was time to feel the tug from a few fat rainbows during a drift boat trip on the Deerfield River.

After his first few casts throwing streamers around, I noticed a significant improvement from last year when he floated the Deerfield River with me. I asked him if he spent more time on the fly in the past year. His response was, “Nope, but I was casting in the backyard at grammys house before Easter dinner” :-) My response: “Thata boy!”

We boated a couple quick fish, then I handed him the nymph rod. He said “Is this the one where I have to mend all the time?” I grinned and said “throw it out there, the boat will do most of the work”. He hooked 2 fish in the first 3 drifts, but only one made it to net.

The fishing slowed down in the afternoon, but he stuck it out for the entire 10 mile float. This kid loves to fish, so I was amazed that I could actually get him out of the boat at the take out.
